The Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU) broke the youngest team to the octofinal draw at BU this past weekend in the last unopposed tournament of the year. Chris Bergman & Ashley Novak, the dynamic sophomore/freshman duo already ranked in the top twenty teams in the league with two prior breaks (including a tournament win) to their credit, made the break and narrowly lost a split decision in octos to a Harvard team ranked third in the nation that went on to win the tournament.

Here are the official RUDU accomplishments from Boston University:
Chris Bergman & Ashley Novak – 13th Team [break to octofinals] Ashley Novak – 4th Novice Speaker

This weekend marked the fifteenth weekend of the twenty-two so far this season where Rutgers has placed at least one team in varsity outrounds. Of the seven where Rutgers has not made the varsity eliminations, five of them have involved a Rutgers break to novice outrounds. Only two weekends this year, one each semester, have involved no Rutgers advancements to elimination rounds.

Three tournaments remain in the regular season, starting this weekend with a trip to the University of Virginia. Practice resumes Tuesday to prepare for this and the following tournaments in Pennsylvania. Nationals is now less than a month away and Rutgers, still ranked fourth overall in the country, is poised to contend for the title.
