The Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU) sent seven teams to two tournaments last weekend and were rewarded with six total breaks, three to varsity and three to novice out-rounds. The performance made this weekend the most successful in RUDU history in terms of percentage and total number of advancements to elimination rounds.

At the Yale IV, a tournament held in British Parliamentary style, David Reiss reunited with Kyle Bomeisl to advance to varsity quarterfinals, narrowly missing advancement to semifinals in a contentious round against Harvard and Stanford.

Meanwhile, on the APDA circuit, all five teams RUDU took to Syracuse broke, two to varsity and three to novice outrounds. The top-breaking novice team, Quinn Maingi & Kurt Falk, narrowly missed the break to varsity outrounds and went on to drop novice finals on a close decision. Meanwhile, Arbi Llaveshi & Adam Bomeisl, debating together for the first time, faced only breaking teams in all five in-rounds, beating four of them including the eventual 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 8th place finishers. They dropped to the top team in fourth round and the 3rd team in a rematch in quarterfinals. Finally, Chris Bergman received an official varsity speaker award (6th) for the first time ever after being nudged out of his previously announced 10th-place finish last weekend at Maryland.

Here are the many official results from Syracuse:
Arbi Llaveshi & Adam Bomeisl – 6th Team
Chris Bergman & Nisha Kumar – 7th Team
Quinn Maingi & Kurt Falk – 9th Team
Chris Bergman – 6th Speaker
Quinn Maingi & Kurt Falk – 2nd Novice Team
Asher Wasserman & Daimler Vadlamuri – 3rd Novice Team
Chris Beal & Nick Guida – 4th Novice Team
Quinn Maingi – 2nd Novice Speaker
Kurt Falk – 3rd Novice Speaker

The novice speaker finishes put both Quinn & Kurt in the top 15 NOTY, giving RUDU three total novices on the NOTY board, already one shy of the team-record final total for all of last year. As it stands today, Kurt is ranked 14th, Alex Jubb 13th, and Quinn 3rd Novice of the Year, just two and a half points back from 1st overall.

Rutgers will be back in action with twelve total teams at the University of Pennsylvania this coming weekend, including nearly all participants from the very successful run at Syracuse.

The Rutgers team joins in a toast of the various Seussy awards they won at Syracuse.
