The second George Washington University tournament of the season was even more successful than the first for the Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU). RUDU took seven teams to the tournament and all came away with a winning record, with three advancing to partial octofinals, a break of twelve teams. Chris Bergman & Ashley Novak, last year’s top RUDU partnership, led the way with a 6th place finish after losing a very narrow 2-1 decision in quarterfinals to the eventual finalists who’d also beaten Adam Bomeisl & Russell Potter in the octo.
Here are the official results from GW-II:
Ashley Novak & Chris Bergman – 6th Team
Adam Bomeisl & Russell Potter – 9th Team
Quinn Maingi & Arbi Llaveshi – 11th Team
Ashley Novak – 7th Speaker
Sean Leonard – 7th Novice Speaker
The performance keeps RUDU at 4th overall in the country, narrowing the gap with 3rd place Harvard. Harvard currently stands at 177.25 points, with Rutgers at 164.00. Johns Hopkins is 5th, with 149.00. Rutgers has two debaters a point or half a point short of qualifying for Nationals, which is worth 6 points in the rankings. Those two qualifications, by Maingi and Gordon Morrisette respectively, would put Rutgers within a couple points of Harvard by itself.
This week is the reopening of the Rutgers academic year with the start of Spring semester, with meetings resuming in Murray 210 at 9:00 PM tonight. The next tournament, a three-day affair in Syracuse, New York, are the 2013 North American Championships, this weekend. David Reiss & Kyle Bomeisl took 6th place for Rutgers at the 2012 Championships in Toronto.
