The Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU) is holding two official Novice Retreats this month prior to the opening of classes to prepare incoming new members for the rigors of the debate season.

While not strictly required for new members who are interested in joining, each of the retreats will offer an intense fun-filled three-day introduction to parliamentary debate, including public speaking, strategy and tactics, casewriting, and practice rounds. If you’re interested in being a part of the team in 2011-2012, these will be your best chance to get started on the right foot and be ready to take on rival schools right away.

The first retreat will be held before dorms open on August 24-26, 2011. Housing is available for those who need it. The second will be right after dorms open, on August 29-31, 2011. The retreats will carry the same content, so one need only attend one retreat. If you’re considering both, the first one will be a little longer and thus slightly more in-depth.

If you’re interested in the Novice Retreats, please contact Coach Storey Clayton at or leave a comment on this post! We look forward to meeting you.

Rutgers' School of Communication and Information on the College Avenue campus in New Brunswick will host the Novice Retreats.
